Kick off meeting of ERC GERACLE at GFZ!

Created by Karina Wilgan |

The GFZ Team has organized the in-person kick-off meeting of GERACLE project. The meeting was held on January 21-22, 2026 at the Telegrafenberg campus at GFZ (Potsdam, Germany). We hosted 21 participants from our four partner institutions.

We had a busy meeting schedule. On the first day, each team introduced their topic and team members. Monika Korte, the project coordinator and PI from the GFZ side, gave a lecture about the geomagnetic field and its reversals and excursions, with special emphasis on the events relevant to the project, such as the Laschamps excursion and Matuyama-Bruhnes reversal. Emilia Kilpua, the PI from University of Helsinki presented topics related to the Earth’s magnetospheres and the GER (geomagnetic excursions and reversals) in different solar activity conditions. Harald Rieder, a PI from BOKU introduced the topics related to the atmosphere and climate during the GER events, with special emphasis on the Earth-system model experiments. Ilya Usoskin, a PI from University of Oulu outlined the radiation and magnetospheric models to be developed in the project as well as the softwares that will be utilized. Afterwards, all present team members introduced themselves to the group and said a few words about their background and their roles in the project. The day was finalized by more discussions of how the teams will interact with each other.

We started the second day with a team-building exercise of designing the new logo for the project. You will see the winner displayed on our website. We continued with discussions about state of the art in the four fields that we need to combine to study the effects of extreme geomagnetic field changes. At the end of the meeting, two tours were offered: to the paleomagnetic laboratory, which plays an important role in the paleomagnetic part of the project, and a tour of the historic campus, including the great refractor, Michaelson’s house (the interferometric experiment conducted there has won a Nobel price) and the Einstein tower.
