Outreach activities at GFZ
May 2026 was filled with outreach activities from the GFZ GERACLE scientists. The project coordinator, Monika Korte, gave a lecture as a part of GFZ Friends series on the Telegrafenberg campus and Pablo Rivera Perez gave an outreach talk at Ringbar in Berlin as part of the Pint of Science festival.
On May 12, Monika Korte gave an exciting evening lecture at Café Freundlich on the Telegrafenberg campus where GFZ is located. She took us on a journey from the Earth’s core all the way to outer space and explained everything there is to know about Earth’s magnetic field research at the GFZ.
The Earth’s magnetic field is generated deep within the Earth and, in the form of the magnetosphere, serves as an important protective shield for our habitat. The lecture provided an overview of interesting facts, new findings, and current research topics at the GFZ regarding various aspects of the Earth’s magnetic field, in big part included in GERACLE.
On May 20, our team member Pablo Rivera Pérez gave an outreach talk at Ringbar in Berlin as part of Pint of Science festival. This initiative organizes scientific talks all over the world, in more than 600 cities. During these sessions, scientists share and discuss their research with people in their local pub, bar, cafe or public space.
In this edition, Pablo gave an outreach talk titled: Rocks that remember. The magnetic history of the Earth. He explained how scientist can decipher the past geomagnetic field by analyzing geological and archaeological records. The event was a huge success and the audience was highly engaged, asking many questions. Extreme events such as excursions and reversals and their effects in the Earth’s system, naturally came up during the session and sparked great curiosity among the audience.
